Cloud lingers, sunshine hours below average

Ireland has been under a blanket of cloud this past week, with below-average sunshine levels recorded across the country.

Observatory, Co. , saw only 19.7 hours of sunshine (51% of average), while , Co. , fared slightly better with 37.3 hours (98% of average).

The coming five days doesn’t promise much improvement, with showers or longer spells of rain expected and sunshine amounts forecast to remain a little below average for this time of year.

Here’s a satellite image taken by at midday on Tuesday, showing the largely overcast conditions across Munster and South Leinster, with scattered cloud over the northern half of Ireland.

The clouds take on the appearance of “cotton,” a characteristic of cumulus clouds.
