Cork Airport shines brightest
Cork Airport basked in 34 hours of sunshine over the past week, earning it the title of Ireland’s sunniest spot.
With sunshine totals hitting 122% of the seasonal norm, Cork Airport’s clear skies stood out sharply against the gloomier northwest, where some areas saw less than 80% of their typical sunshine for this time of year.
Shannon, in County Clare, claimed the warmest spot, recording an average temperature of 8.6°C—1.2°C above the seasonal average.
Meanwhile, Mullingar in County Westmeath was the chilliest location, with a mean temperature of 7.1°C.
Oak Park in Carlow stayed remarkably dry, receiving just 1.5 mm of rain—only 11% of the usual amount expected at the station.
In contrast, Malin Head in Donegal took the crown for the wettest area, recording 17.7 mm of rainfall.
This March has stood out as remarkably dry, especially when compared to the exceptionally wet months of March of 2023 and 2024, some of the wettest on record.
April looks set to follow suit, with the east and north staying entirely dry for at least the next 10 to 12 days.
Sunshine will be abundant everywhere.
As mid-April nears, there’s a faint hint of winds swinging to a chillier northeast or northerly direction, but dry conditions should largely persist.
