Funding for climate projects in The Aran Islands

Galway County Council has launched a €60,000 pilot Climate Action Fund to support climate-focused projects by organisations, businesses, and communities on Oileáin Árann (Aran Islands).
The islands—Árainn (Inis Mór), Inis Meáin, and Inis Oírr—are designated as Galway‘s Decarbonisation Zone under the 2024-2029 Climate Action Plan.
Decarbonisation Zones aim to reduce local carbon emissions through sustainable community-driven solutions, targeting greenhouse gas reductions in everyday activities.
The fund will finance projects in four areas: Energy, Travel, Food and Waste, and Local Environmental Action.
Applications open on Monday, 28 April, and close on Friday, 30 May.

Councillor Martina Kinane, Cathaoirleach, praised the islands’ commitment to sustainability, while Chief Executive Liam Conneally highlighted the fund’s role in fostering resilient, low-carbon communities and sharing insights county-wide.
Director of Services Uinsinn Finn noted the islands’ strong community efforts, including the Comharchumann Fuinneamh, which promotes sustainable homes, transport, and ecosystem protection.
