Approval for Cavan flood relief scheme

The Office of Public Works (OPW) has approved additional funding of €55,264 for planned flood relief works at Pollamore Far in County Cavan.
Cavan County Council has applied for the funding under the OPW’s Minor Flood Mitigation Works and Coastal Protection Scheme.
Pollamore has been impacted by regular flooding, including most recently around the Pollamore Business Park in summer 2023.
The works included creating a temporary floodplain storage area and any alterations to existing ground levels within the detention area, with the objective of stemming flood flow and delay flood peaks reaching the mouth of the culvert downstream at the business park.
The Minor Flood Mitigation Works and Coastal Protection Scheme was introduced by the Office of Public Works in 2009. Since then, 10 funding applications by Cavan County Council have been supported under this scheme.
The purpose of the scheme is to provide funding to Local Authorities to undertake minor flood mitigation works or studies to address localised flooding and coastal protection problems within their administrative areas.
The scheme generally applies where a solution can be readily identified and achieved in a short time frame.
