Kelly to lead BirdWatch Ireland

BirdWatch Ireland has announced the appointment of Dr Andrew Kelly as its new Chief Executive.
He will take up the role in June 2025, succeeding Linda Lennon, who is stepping down after three years at the organisation’s helm.
BirdWatch Ireland, established in 1968, is dedicated to the conservation of wild birds and their habitats across Ireland.
Dr Kelly joins the country’s largest independent conservation charity with an extensive background in animal welfare and environmental advocacy.
He previously served as Chief Executive of the Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ISPCA) for seven years and as Director of the UK-based Freedom for Animals for three years.
A zoologist by training, Dr Kelly holds a first-class honours degree from the University of Glasgow and a PhD in evolutionary ecology from the University of Leeds. His early career included post-doctoral research on a variety of species, including birds, sea turtles and invertebrates.
He later moved into wildlife rehabilitation, managing the RSPCA‘s largest facility for six years and leading efforts to monitor the survival of released wildlife. He went on to head the RSPCA’s wildlife department and has also worked as a wildlife policy advisor for Humane Society International.
Speaking about his appointment, Dr Kelly said, “I am honoured to join BirdWatch Ireland, an organisation I have long admired for its exceptional conservation and education work. As a lifelong birdwatcher, I am passionate about protecting Ireland’s birdlife, which faces growing threats. I look forward to working with the team and supporters to ensure a brighter future for our birds.”
Linda Lennon, who will leave the post in July, has been credited with strengthening the organisation’s finances and operations during her tenure, helping it to navigate a challenging period.
Jim Fitzharris, Chairman of BirdWatch Ireland, welcomed the appointment, “We are very pleased to have Andrew join us. Thanks to Linda’s outstanding leadership, BirdWatch Ireland is in a strong position. Andrew’s experience and commitment will ensure we continue to lead on environmental advocacy at a time when Ireland’s biodiversity is under serious pressure. The Board is excited to work with him to build on this foundation.”
