North Coast Outshines the Rest

While much of Ireland experienced a mixed bag of showers and sunshine on Monday and Tuesday, Malin Head has emerged as the country’s sunniest location.
According to the latest data from Met Éireann, Malin Head recorded an impressive 104.1 hours of sunshine over the past week—a staggering 245% of the average. This makes the northern tip of Donegal the brightest place in Ireland.
The exceptional sunshine in Malin Head contrasts with conditions elsewhere. Johnstown Castle in Co. Wexford, for example, recorded the least sunshine, with 74.1 hours—still 245% of its normal average, but notably less than the northern coast’s sunny streak.
Overall, the past week has been marked by below-average rainfall across most parts of the country, though heavy, scattered showers and thunderstorms hit some areas—particularly the Midlands—bringing localised high rainfall totals.
Looking ahead, the dry spell is expected to shift, with conditions becoming more unsettled from Friday onward. A mobile westerly airflow will bring above-average rainfall, particularly to western and northern counties.
Despite the approaching rain, temperatures remain encouragingly mild. Last week saw mean air temperatures range from 10.6°C at Dublin Airport to 15.6°C in Belmullet, with soil temperatures also running 3 to 7 degrees above average. This trend is set to continue, with air temperatures expected to remain 1 to 2 degrees above seasonal norms.
