Funds approved for flood protection works in Laois and Kilkenny

The Office of Public Works (OPW) has confirmed the approval of additional funding for crucial flood mitigation projects in Kilkenny and Laois under the government’s Minor Flood Mitigation Works and Coastal Protection Scheme.
In County Kilkenny, Kilkenny County Council has secured an additional €69,558 to support planned works at Ardaloo, Jenkinstown.
The project includes the construction of a flood wall around a vulnerable property site. The council has committed to protecting four homes in total—three at risk of flooding and one isolated property that experiences frequent inundation.
This latest allocation adds to the €78,453 already granted in August 2024, bringing the total funding for the Ardaloo project to €148,011.
Meanwhile, in County Laois, Laois County Council has been awarded €25,200 to complete the final phase of a flood mitigation initiative along the River Nore. The planned works involve the removal of deadwood and debris, as well as tree pruning, to address flow restrictions along approximately 1.3 kilometres of the river, stretching from Newbridge to its confluence with the River Erkina.
The latest funding brings the total investment in the Laois project to €289,373.
A spokesperson for the OPW said the funding reflects the government’s continued commitment to supporting local authorities in protecting communities from the increasing threat of flooding, particularly in the face of climate change.
Both councils are expected to begin the funded works in the coming months.
