Photo Competition Celebrates Trees in Irish Life

The Teagasc Development Department and , Food and the (DAFM) have announced the launch of their annual summer photo competition, inviting enthusiasts across Ireland to capture the many benefits trees and forests bring to our lives.

Running until 14 July 2025, the ‘Trees in Our Lives’ competition is open to all age groups, with separate junior and adult categories.

Budding photographers are encouraged to submit images that reflect the vital role of trees in Irish landscapes, livelihoods, and ecosystems. Entrants can submit up to one photo under each of the three themed categories.

Competition Themes:

  • Trees and Water: A celebration of the harmony between trees and aquatic landscapes. Entrants are invited to showcase how trees enhance rivers, lakes, and wetlands—improving water quality, stabilising riverbanks, and supporting .
  • Trees on the Farm: This theme highlights the integral role of trees in Irish farming—providing shelter for livestock, improving soil health, supporting sustainability, and enhancing the rural landscape.
  • Trees and Biodiversity: Participants are asked to capture the rich ecosystems that forests support. From fungi and flowers to birds and insects, forests are home to a wealth of species worth celebrating.

Exciting Prizes on Offer

Generously sponsored by DAFM, prizes will be awarded in each theme and age category:

  • Adult Category:
    • €300 for each theme winner
    • €100 for each runner-up
    • €300 for the overall adult winner
  • Junior Category:
    • €150 for each theme winner
    • €50 for each runner-up
    • €150 for the overall junior winner

Speaking at the launch, , Acting Head of the Teagasc Forestry Development Department, said, “We are delighted to co-organise this popular competition once again in 2025. Ireland’s forests provide a wide range of services—from environmental to economic—and we’re looking forward to seeing how participants capture these benefits through their lens.”

Whether you’re an amateur shutterbug or simply someone who appreciates the natural world, this competition offers a chance to explore the countryside, learn about forestry, and maybe even take home a prize.
