Innovative Wetland Technology to Transform Pettigo

Pettigo donegal

has announced the commencement of a significant €6 million upgrade to the Wastewater Treatment Plant in County , marking a major step forward in sustainable water management for the village and its surrounding areas.

Starting this month, the project will enhance the existing plant’s capacity and introduce a state-of-the-art Integrated Constructed Wetland (ICW), an environmentally-friendly, natural wastewater treatment system designed to mimic the functions of a natural wetland.

The innovative approach promises to reduce energy consumption, lower carbon emissions, and cut operational costs, all while supporting local .

Integrated Constructed Wetlands use a series of ponds planted with native wetland species like reeds, rushes, and sedges.

Wastewater flows slowly through these ponds, where natural microorganisms help break pollutants, including nitrogen and phosphorus, before the treated water safely returns to nearby rivers or the sea. This process eliminates the need for chemical additives traditionally used in wastewater treatment, making it a greener and more sustainable solution.

, Portfolio Manager at Uisce Éireann, expressed pride in delivering this important upgrade for the Pettigo community: “We are delighted to see this project get underway. Not only will it increase capacity to meet the needs of current and future residents, but it will also safeguard the local . The new constructed wetland will provide an energy-efficient, chemical-free way to treat wastewater, helping to protect our precious waterways.”

The upgrade project is being carried out by Veolia Water Ireland on behalf of Uisce Éireann and is expected to be completed by Spring 2026.
