A chronological record of weather events and extremes that occurred in Ireland on 17 May down through history.
1979: Temperatures struggle to reach above 10c as heavy rain and strong northwest winds sweep across Ireland.
1980: Galway, Birr and Clones all record 23c, following a chilly start to the day (2-3c).
1986: Strong gale force winds of 60-100 km/h hit the southwest and northwest of Ireland.
1992: High pressure centred over Ireland sees temperatures rising into the low to mid-20s across Ireland. Valentia records 24c.
1993: A 122 km/h gust is recorded at Rosslare in County Wexford, as Valentia records 32mm of rainfall.
1998: The mercury level rises to 23c at Shannon Airport, Clare.
2001: Proposals to locate the first wind farm off the country’s west coast are unveiled. The £100 million project is to be located off the north Kerry coast on the southern lip of the Shannon estuary and is to involve the construction of between 20 and 30 wind turbines.
2007: Warm conditions spread across Ireland as Cork City records 23.5c.
2022: Strong gales whip Ireland with Belmullet, Mayo, recording a gust of 47 knots (87 km/h).
