A fishing trip near Killybegs, Co Donegal, turned into a day to remember for one angler who landed one of the largest tuna caught off the Irish coast this year.

The impressive 2.7-metre-long bluefin weighed in at a staggering 760 pounds and was caught by Aoife McGettigan, who had returned home from Australia for the visit. After being carefully weighed and measured, the tuna was tagged and released.

Killybegs Fishing Trips shared the moment on social media, adding that later in the fishing excursion the group caught a smaller tuna, weighing 180 pounds.

The Irish record, a 962-pound (436 kg) bluefin tuna, was caught in Donegal Bay in 2001.

While bluefin tuna of this size are rare in Irish waters, they are known to migrate through the region, particularly during late summer and autumn.
