The government has unveiled the locations of 53 new high-power electric vehicle (EV) recharging hubs set to be installed along Ireland’s national road network.

Backed by nearly €8 million in grant funding, these new sites are expected to be operational by the end of the year.

In total, the new hubs will deliver 175 fast and ultra-fast charging points, making it easier and quicker for EV drivers to recharge on longer journeys. The initiative aims to ensure that drivers are never more than 60 kilometres from a recharging hub, helping to create a truly national EV charging network.

The charging hubs are part of the Light Duty Vehicle (LDV) initiative, managed by (ZEVI) and delivered by (TII). This phase of the programme targeted over 1,200km of national single carriageway roads. Funding was awarded through a competitive process open to service station operators, hotel and retail owners, car parks, and other publicly accessible sites. A total of €7.9 million has been allocated under this round.

These 53 new hubs will significantly enhance EV charging coverage across key roadways. For areas along the 1,200km network not covered in this round, efforts are ongoing to identify and address remaining gaps in infrastructure.

This announcement marks another major milestone under Ireland’s National EV Charging Network Plan, which is designed to ensure EV charging is accessible across the country—from motorways to rural roads, and from major cities to small towns.

It builds on previous ZEVI initiatives, including the delivery of 131 high-power recharging points at 17 motorway and dual carriageway sites. A separate grant scheme covering an additional 3,000km of the national road network is also underway, with applications closing in June.

The expanded network complements existing supports for EV users, such as purchase grants, home charger grants, and reduced Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) for electric vehicles.
