Frigate Sails Past Dalkey Island

In a striking scene that could have been lifted from centuries past, a frigate was spotted sailing gracefully between Dalkey Hill and the Dalkey Island Battery this afternoon.

The Shtandardt cut a majestic figure as she glided through Killiney Bay — a living connection to Ireland’s seafaring past.

The Shtandart is a modern, fully functional replica of the frigate Shtandart, the first ship of Russia’s Baltic Fleet, originally commissioned by Tsar Peter the Great in 1703. The replica was launched in 1999 in Saint Petersburg and has since sailed extensively as a sail training and cultural ambassador vessel.

With Dalkey Island’s Napoleonic-era battery in the background, the scene was almost timeless.
