Uisce Éireann to replace ageing water mains in Limerick City

Uisce Éireann will begin works next week to strengthen the water network supplying parts of Limerick City by replacing more than 1.1 kilometres of ageing cast iron backyard water mains.
The project, part of the utility’s National Leakage Reduction Programme, will take place along O’Donoghue Avenue, Clansfort Terrace, Glenmore Avenue and Mulgrave Street. The works aim to reduce high levels of leakage and improve water quality by replacing deteriorating pipes that have become a significant source of bursts and supply interruptions.
In older estates, water connections were often installed to the rear of properties and shared between neighbours. These backyard services, typically made of iron or lead, are difficult to repair and can cause low pressure across entire neighbourhoods when leaks occur.

Programme Manager Brian McCarthy said the upgrades would secure the city’s supply for decades to come. “We’re investing in the future of Limerick City with essential network upgrades that will strengthen and sustain our water infrastructure for generations. These improvements will safeguard homes and businesses, ensuring a reliable supply of clean water for years to come,” he said.
Traffic management will be in place during the works, including traffic lights and flagmen on O’Donoghue Avenue, Clansfort Terrace and Mulgrave Street. A road closure will apply on Glenmore Avenue from January 5th to January 30th, with local and emergency access maintained.
Short-term water supply interruptions may be required, with customers given at least 48 hours’ notice. The works, carried out by Ward and Burke Construction Ltd on behalf of Uisce Éireann, are scheduled for completion in April 2026.
