Newport Furnace in County Mayo has become the first Met Éireann synoptic station to record a temperature of 20°C or higher in 2025.

The mercury rose to 20.2°C at the North Mayo station on Tuesday afternoon, surpassing the previous yearly high of 19.5°C set at nearby Mount Dillon in County Roscommon on Monday.

It was a warm day across most of Ireland on Tuesday.

Other notable highs include 19.8°C at , ; 19.5°C at Belmullet, Mayo; 19.1°C at Shannon, Clare; and 19°C at , , and Mace Head, .

Newport’s record may not stand for long, however, as temperatures are expected to reach close to 20°C later on Wednesday afternoon.

The persistent cooler weather of the past week in eastern and southern counties has been replaced by much milder conditions, aided by a slackening wind.

At midday on Wednesday, Airport was reporting 16°C while Dublin Airport recorded 14°C.

The warm and sunny conditions will be replaced later in the weekend by more typical April weather, with cooler temperatures and increased rainfall.

Temperatures will progressively drop from highs of 16 to 20°C on Friday to 10 to 13°C by Sunday.
