OPW Funding for Tallow Flood Study

Flood

The Office of Public Works (OPW) has approved €90,000 in additional funding for flood risk works in Tallow, Waterford, under its Minor Flood Mitigation Works and Coastal Protection Scheme.

The funding, granted to Waterford City and County Council, will support a detailed study aimed at identifying the causes of recurring flooding along West Street in the village. The project includes a topographical survey, a flood investigation, the preparation of a flood defence options report, and Appropriate Assessment (AA) screening of the preferred solution.

Tallow has seen repeated flooding in recent years, particularly due to the Glenaboy River overtopping its banks. The village suffered significant damage during Storm Babet in 2023, when torrential rain led to widespread flooding and disruption across West Waterford.

First launched in 2009, the OPW’s Minor Works Scheme provides funding to local authorities for small-scale flood mitigation and coastal protection projects that can be implemented quickly. Since its inception, the scheme has supported 20 applications from Waterford City and County Council.

Eligible projects must cost less than €750,000, with the OPW covering up to 90% of the total cost. Applications are assessed based on a range of criteria including economic viability, social impact, environmental considerations, and cost-benefit analysis.
