The Atlantic hurricane season is showing continued activity as meteorologists monitor a tropical wave expected to emerge off the west coast of Africa on Sunday.

The US National Hurricane Center (NHC) says environmental conditions may allow some slow development as the system moves westward to west-northwestward at around 15 miles per hour across the eastern and central tropical Atlantic next week. The chances of formation remain low, with a 0 percent likelihood over the next 48 hours and 30 percent over the next seven days.

The season, which began on June 1 and runs through November 30, has so far produced several named storms. Tropical Storm Andrea, which formed on June 23, marked the latest start to an Atlantic hurricane season since 2014.

The first hurricane of the season, Hurricane Erin, developed on August 11 and rapidly intensified to a Category 5 storm by August 16. Although it did not make landfall, Erin posed a significant threat along the East Coast of the United States. The storm caused at least two deaths and left one person missing due to dangerous rip currents. High surf, strong winds, and coastal flooding led to evacuations along North Carolina’s Outer Banks.

Tropical Storm Fernand formed slightly earlier than the seasonal average and is expected to remain over the Atlantic before becoming post-tropical or extratropical by the end of the week. Another disturbance in the eastern Caribbean, which previously had a 40 percent chance of development, has dissipated due to dry air and no longer poses a threat to the United States.

Forecasters continue to monitor the tropics closely as the peak of the hurricane season approaches. While the current tropical wave is not expected to develop rapidly, experts warn that conditions can change quickly and the system warrants continued observation.
