Hurricane Gabrielle, currently a Category 3 hurricane, will not directly impact Ireland’s weather. However, its remnants will feed a band of rain across the island from Friday night into Saturday morning.

After a quieter-than-forecast 2025 Atlantic hurricane season so far, the ocean has come alive in recent days with the formation of the second named hurricane of the year and the potential development of two other tropical depressions in the eastern and central Atlantic.

Long-range weather models had initially suggested that Hurricane Gabrielle might follow a similar track to its predecessor, Erin, which passed between Ireland and Iceland in late August and ended an exceptionally dry spell. Gabrielle has instead taken a more eastward path and is set to bring strong winds and heavy rain to the Iberian Peninsula later this weekend and into Monday. A hurricane warning is also in effect for The Azores.

In Ireland, a band of rain associated with Gabrielle’s remnants will move eastward across the country late on Friday into Saturday morning. A clearance in the west overnight will spread eastward through Saturday morning. The remainder of the weekend will be largely dry, apart from scattered showers feeding into northwestern counties on Saturday afternoon.
