Saturn’s Rings Set for Rare Edge-On Display

Astronomy enthusiasts across Ireland are being offered a rare glimpse of Saturn like they’ve never seen before.
On October 21, the planet’s iconic rings will appear almost edge-on from Earth, a phenomenon that occurs only once every 15 years.
The alignment is so precise that the rings may look like a thin line or, in some cases, vanish from view entirely.
Astronomy Ireland is hosting a special event at its Blanchardstown headquarters, starting at 7pm, giving the public an opportunity to witness the “razor-thin” rings through some of the largest telescopes in the country. Families, children, and adults are all welcome to attend.
The event follows a rare “Titan shadow transit” in late September, when Saturn’s largest moon cast its shadow across the planet. Telescopes will be set up for public viewing,
The headquarters is easily accessible off the M50 in Blanchardstown. For directions, visit www.astronomy.ie/map.
