Govt says utility companies on standby to respond to Storm Amy

Storm-Amy-4-1200x675 Govt says utility companies on standby to respond to Storm Amy

Local response teams are on high alert as Storm Amy approaches, with strong winds and heavy rain expected to hit large parts of the country tonight, tomorrow, and into Saturday.

Met Éireann has issued a series of warnings, including Status Orange alerts for winds in Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, and Sligo, with gusts reaching near gale force. Kerry faces an Orange rainfall warning until 8pm tonight, while other counties are under Status Yellow alerts for rain and wind. Forecasters warn of localised flooding, fallen trees, travel disruption, and possible power outages.

Keith Leonard, National Director of the National Directorate for Fire and Emergency Management, said emergency response teams are ready. “Local Authority severe weather teams are activated and preparing for the storm’s approach. Members of the public should monitor conditions closely, avoid coastal areas, and take care on the roads,” he advised.

Authorities urge people in Orange warning areas to limit travel, shelter in place, and prepare for potential disruption to electricity and water supplies. The Irish Coast Guard has repeated its advice to “Stay Back, Stay High, Stay Dry” along exposed coastal areas.

Emergency services and utility providers are ready to respond to any incidents. ESB Networks warned against approaching fallen power lines, while Uisce Éireann advised customers to check their website or sign up for text alerts regarding water services.
