Ireland is set to bask in a spell of summer heat from Thursday through the weekend, as a plume of very warm air surges up from the south.

Temperatures will climb into the mid to high 20s across much of the country, with long spells of sunshine and mostly dry conditions.

The warmest days are expected to be Friday and Saturday, while Sunday brings a slight risk of thunderstorms, particularly in the south and west.

Cooler, more unsettled weather is forecast to return early next week, with scattered heavy showers and a drop in temperatures.

Thursday:
Long spells of sunshine with dry conditions. Some cloud may drift onto north-facing coasts at times.
Highs of 18 to 26°C, cooler along the northwest coast.
Light southerly winds, turning westerly later.

Friday:
A warm, dry day with mostly clear skies. Some high cloud may edge in from the north and northwest.
Temperatures ranging from 19 to 28°C, coolest along exposed western and northwestern coasts.
Light southerly winds.

Saturday:
A very warm day with prolonged sunshine.
Temperatures of 21 to 29°C.
Gentle southeasterly winds.

Sunday:
Largely dry with sunny spells. Scattered thunderstorms may develop in the south and west by afternoon, spreading further inland later.
Highs of 20 to 27°C.
Gentle to occasionally moderate southeasterly winds.

Monday:
Warm in Ulster and Leinster with highs of 24 to 26°C, but cooler air will move in from the southwest through the day. Temperatures further south and west will range from 17 to 21°C.
Winds light to moderate, southerly or southwesterly.

Rest of next week:
Unsettled conditions with scattered heavy showers and a risk of thunderstorms. A southwesterly airflow will bring cooler weather, with temperatures ranging from the mid-teens to low 20s, warmest in sheltered inland areas.
