Ireland is set for an extended spell of unsettled weather, with frequent rainfall and fresh winds persisting into the first half of September. Rainfall totals will generally be highest in the west, with temperatures remaining on the cool side nationwide.

Tuesday will be dominated by heavy showers in western and northern counties, spreading northeast during the afternoon. While parts of the south and east enjoyed brighter conditions, another band of rain was expected to move into the southwest by nightfall.

Wednesday will bring a wet start across Leinster and Ulster as overnight rain clears eastwards, while the west will see a temporary respite before showers spread widely during the day. Some of these will merge to give longer spells of rain, particularly in western areas overnight.

The unsettled pattern will persist through Thursday, when heavy showers and longer spells of rain are likely to bring the risk of spot flooding, especially in the west. Friday will see scattered showers, easing later, though another band of rain is forecast to approach from the Atlantic overnight.

Further outbreaks of rain are expected on Saturday, again with heavier bursts leading to localised flooding risks. The rain will clear to the northeast by evening, followed by scattered showers, with mist or drizzle lingering along Atlantic coasts.

Sunday will continue the unsettled run, beginning with showers before a more persistent band of rain sweeps in from the west. Daytime temperatures will remain below seasonal norms, with highs generally in the mid-teens.

Looking ahead, Atlantic systems are expected to dominate the first week of September, bringing above-average rainfall and cooler than average conditions. Fresh winds will persist throughout. There are some tentative signs of high pressure building from the south during the second week of September, which could bring drier conditions to southern and eastern counties, though the west and north are likely to remain more unsettled.
