With dangerous heatwaves and wildfires sweeping across Europe, Tánaiste Simon Harris is urging Irish holidaymakers to take weather warnings seriously and prepare before they travel.

An 11% jump in consular cases so far this year has prompted fresh calls for caution, particularly among young travellers heading abroad after school or college. The Department of Foreign Affairs says many emergencies could be avoided with better awareness of extreme weather risks.

“Temperatures across Europe are reaching dangerous highs. We’re seeing more cases of heat-related illness, disrupted travel, and even evacuations,” said Harris. “This summer is about making the right memories—so that means staying safe, informed and weather-aware.”

Travellers are being advised to follow health alerts, avoid outdoor activity during peak heat, stay hydrated, and look out for vulnerable travel companions, including older adults and children.
