Rain to Dominate as Unsettled Weather Persists

Rain-Ireland-1200x675 Rain to Dominate as Unsettled Weather Persists

Ireland is set for another unsettled spell of weather, with above-average rainfall expected to persist well into the middle of September as the country remains under the influence of a mobile Atlantic regime.

Tuesday will bring a brief reprieve, with a drier day than of late. Sunny spells are forecast, though scattered showers in the west will become more widespread as the afternoon progresses. Some of these showers will merge to give longer spells of rain in the west. Later, a band of rain will move into the southwest before midnight and spread to all areas overnight. Temperatures will range between 14 and 19 degrees in light westerly winds that will become variable later.

Wednesday is expected to begin wet, with some heavy falls of rain in places. Conditions will improve from the west by mid-morning as showers replace the more persistent rain, though East Ulster may hold on to the rain for much of the day. Temperatures will be between 13 and 17 degrees, coolest in the north, with moderate westerly winds. Thursday will see another day of unsettled conditions, with showers along the Atlantic seaboard becoming more widespread during the afternoon. The best of any drier spells will be in the south and southeast.

Friday looks set to be largely dry in the east, though the west will see showers carried in on a southwesterly airflow. Persistent rain will affect western and northwestern coasts, with some uncertainty as to how far inland it will spread. That rain is expected to move eastwards later in the day and overnight, bringing wet conditions to most areas. Saturday will begin dry in the east and south, but rain in the southwest will extend across the country, with the possibility of localised downpours before clearing to scattered showers in the west by evening.

Sunday will start with widespread rain before a clearance to showers develops in the southwest and slowly moves northeast. Temperatures over the weekend will generally range between 13 and 18 degrees, with winds fresh from the southeast before veering westerly at times.

Looking ahead to next week, the unsettled theme will continue with frequent rain and showers and moderate to fresh winds. Rainfall amounts will remain well above average and temperatures will stay slightly below normal. Forecasters say there are tentative signs that high pressure may build from the south by mid-September, bringing more settled conditions to the south and east.
