New tropical disturbance emerges in the Atlantic

A new tropical disturbance is expected to emerge off the west coast of Africa over the coming days, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) reports.
The system, a developing tropical wave, could see slow development as it moves west or west-northwest across the eastern and central tropical Atlantic at roughly 15 miles per hour.
Forecasters currently assess the likelihood of formation in the next 48 hours as near zero, rising only to around 30 percent over the next seven days.
The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season has so far been notably quieter than early forecasts suggested. Despite entering the peak months of activity in August and September, the Atlantic has produced fewer named storms and hurricanes than expected. Most systems this year have struggled to organise, leaving the basin calmer than anticipated.
Early 2025 predictions had suggested an above-average season in both storm frequency and intensity. To date, however, the Atlantic has seen relatively subdued activity.
