SunSmart Campaign Launched In Limerick

The University of Limerick has launched Ireland’s first SunSmart Campus initiative, aiming to boost skin cancer prevention across its grounds.
In partnership with the HSE Mid West, the National Cancer Control Programme, and Healthy Ireland, UL is introducing sunscreen dispensers and sun safety information boards at key locations around campus. The goal is to encourage students, staff, and visitors to adopt better sun protection habits.
The campaign focuses on the SunSmart five Ss: Slip on protective clothing, Slop on SPF 30+ sunscreen, Slap on a wide-brimmed hat, Seek shade during peak UV hours (11am–3pm), and Slide on UV-blocking sunglasses.
Skin cancer remains the most common cancer in Ireland, with over 11,000 cases diagnosed each year. Worryingly, melanoma rates are rising among people under 50. The UL initiative hopes to promote lifelong sun-safe behaviours among young adults, reducing future skin cancer risks.
Sarah Kennedy, Healthy UL Manager, said the three-year pilot will embed skin cancer prevention into everyday campus life, making UL a leader in sun safety education nationwide.
