Approval for Flood Mitigation Works in Athlone

Athlone-Westmeath-1200x675 Approval for Flood Mitigation Works in Athlone
Athlone, Westmeath

Westmeath County Council has received approval for funding under the Office of Public Works’ (OPW) Minor Flood Mitigation Works and Coastal Protection Scheme.

The OPW has allocated €18,000 for works at Garrynafela, Athlone, Co. Westmeath. The project includes the installation of a 300mm drainage pipe and gullies to help reduce localised pluvial flooding.

The Minor Flood Mitigation Works and Coastal Protection Scheme, introduced by the OPW in 2009, provides funding to local authorities to carry out small-scale flood alleviation and coastal protection projects. Since its inception, Westmeath County Council has had eight applications approved under the scheme. Details of past projects are available on FloodInfo.ie.

The scheme supports projects costing up to €750,000, with funding of up to 90% available. Applications are assessed based on economic, social, and environmental criteria, including a cost-benefit analysis. While works typically the responsibility of local authorities are not usually funded, partial support may be considered if the project reduces the risk of flooding to properties.

Local authorities must ensure that approved works do not significantly increase flood risk elsewhere. The timing and management of any approved works are the responsibility of the relevant council.

More information on the scheme and lists of approved projects can be found at FloodInfo.ie.
