Tipperary has been named one of the world’s top places to visit in 2026 by Lonely Planet, joining destinations such as Barbados, Sardinia, Phuket and Finland on the travel guide’s annual Best in Travel list.

The prestigious ranking, released on Tuesday, highlights 25 destinations worldwide that the publisher says travellers should not miss in the coming year. Tipperary is described as being “best for hiking, history and fine food”, with Lonely Planet noting that “the food is remarkable, the landscapes are generous, and the castles are so casually scattered across the county that you’ll probably stumble across one on your way to dinner”.

Tourism Ireland said the accolade will help raise the county’s international profile and attract more visitors to Ireland. “We’re delighted that Tipperary has been recognised as one of the world’s top destinations to visit in 2026,” said Elmagh Killeen, the agency’s head of brand and marketing communications. “This recognition celebrates the county’s hiking trails, rich history and outstanding food experiences. It will inspire international travellers to discover Tipperary for themselves.”

Tom Hall, Lonely Planet’s vice president, said the decision to include Tipperary reflected its “hiking, history and fine food” offering. “Best in Travel celebrates icons of Tipperary like the Rock of Cashel and the blue cheese that takes its name from the castle as well as much more of the county’s diverse appeal,” he said.

Tourism Ireland plans to promote the accolade through international media outreach, social media campaigns and travel fairs, including next month’s World Travel Market in London.

Other destinations named in Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2026 list include Botswana, Peru, Cádiz in Spain, Sardinia, Jeju Island in South Korea, Barbados and Finland.
