1905: A solar eclipse is witnessed in Ireland. Seventy-five percent of the sun is obscured at 12:27 pm. The total eclipse is centred over the Faroe Islands.

1964: The coldest air temperature recorded in August in Ireland (-2.7 °C) occurs at Rathdrum, Co. Wicklow.

1973: A rescue operation is underway to save two men trapped in a submarine on the seabed off the coast of Cork. The two English crewmen on board the 19-foot submarine Pisces III became trapped when it sank while laying cables.

1986: Repair work begins on roads and bridges destroyed by flooding in County Wicklow, caused by Hurricane Charley.

2019: Newport, Co. Mayo, records 48.7 mm of rain, its wettest August day since 1998.

2024: The lowest grass minimum of the month (-0.1 °C) is recorded at Dublin Airport, Co. Dublin.
