1845: The arrival of the potato blight in Ireland is reported in the Dublin Evening Post. The first outbreak is thought to have occurred in Waterford, and the extent of crop failure begins to cause serious concern.

1976: Residents are forced to flee their homes as a gorse fire spreads across Howth Head in Dublin, sending smoke billowing across north Dublin.

1986: Lower-than-anticipated harvests due to bad weather are causing a major cash crisis for many farmers, according to the Agricultural Training Council (ACOT).

1996: Over an inch of rain is recorded in Cork, as wet and windy conditions sweep across Ireland.
