Christmas week shaped by a festive high

Christmas-High-1200x675 Christmas week shaped by a festive high

High pressure is expected to take control of Ireland’s weather from around 23 December, according to the latest guidance from the ECMWF.

Most of its ensemble members show high pressure building over or close to the country. The exact position of the system will determine whether skies are clear or cloudier, and how cold it feels.

Temperatures are likely to be close to or a little below the seasonal average. Calm conditions could also bring an inversion, which would trap colder air near the surface. This would increase the risk of fog, smog and widespread frost during the Christmas period.

Ireland experienced widespread above-average rainfall last week, with the exception of the north. Totals ranged from 84% of the seasonal norm in Ulster to a striking 211% in southern counties. Valentia Observatory in Co. Kerry recorded the highest weekly total at 54.1mm, while Dublin Airport saw just 19.7mm, according to Met Éireann.

The coming week is forecast to remain unsettled, with further above-average rainfall expected nationwide. Weather warnings are in effect until Monday.
