
Newport Furnace heats up race for warmest day of year

Newport Furnace in County Mayo has recorded the warmest temperature of the year on the island of Ireland.
Met Éireann has confirmed that the North Mayo synoptic station reached 21.9°C on Wednesday afternoon, pipping its own 2025 high of 20.2°C from Tuesday.
Finner, County Donegal recorded 20.8°C and Castlederg, County Tyrone, reached 21.2°C on Wednesday.
Other high readings on the day included Thomastown, County Fermanagh (20.6°C), Belmullet, County Mayo (20.5°C), and Claremorris, County Mayo, and Shannon Airport, County Clare (20.4°C).
Temperatures will exceed 20°C in a few western and northwestern locations during Thursday and Friday before a gradual cool down over the weekend.
According to Met Éireann, mean air temperatures over the past week have been well above normal, ranging from 1.1 to 4.7°C above average.
Mean air temperatures have ranged from a cool 8.9°C at Dublin Airport to 13.7°C at Valentia Observatory, Co. Kerry.
A significant number of synoptic stations have not recorded any rainfall during the past seven days.
A maximum of 2.7mm has been recorded at Johnstown Castle in Wexford, which is only 16% of its seasonal average.
