Mount Dillon in County Roscommon has taken the national spotlight today, recording Ireland’s highest temperature of the year so far with 27.0°C.

This new high beats the previous 2025 record of 25.9°C, which was set on 30 April in Athenry, County Galway. That April reading was itself a milestone, marking the highest April temperature ever recorded in Ireland.

Today’s heat comes as much of the country enjoys a burst of summer sunshine, with temperatures widely reaching into the mid-20s. However, the hot spell isn’t done yet, with even warmer conditions possible tomorrow. Temperatures are expected to climb into the mid 20s again on Friday, with some areas potentially edging even higher.

A cooler, more unsettled weather pattern is set to return from late Saturday into Sunday, bringing fresher air and increased cloud cover. As winds shift from the current easterly flow to a more southwesterly and westerly direction, moderate to fresh breezes will return, along with a mix of showers and longer spells of rain, particularly across the west and northwest.

However, not all areas will feel the change immediately. Southern and eastern counties are expected to remain drier for longer, as high pressure ridges continue to influence the weather there, holding off the Atlantic fronts at bay—at least for now.

While today’s milestone at Mount Dillon is a reminder of summer’s full potential, it also signals the classic Irish balancing act between brief heat and returning showers.
