Rainfall Remains Below Normal for Most Areas – But Northwest Sees a Wetter Week

Ireland’s rainfall divide continues, with the northwest soaking up most of the rain while the east stays unusually dry.

Over the past week, Belmullet, Co. Mayo recorded the highest total at 22.8mm, while Casement Aerodrome in Dublin saw just 3.9mm — only 28% of its average.

Despite some unsettled weather ahead, eastern and southeastern counties will likely see 10mm or less over the next week, while western counties could pick up 30mm or more.

Soil moisture deficits are rising fast in the south and east, with some areas now seeing restrictions on growth. Meanwhile, saturated soils persist in the northwest and southwest.

Temperatures remain well above average, especially in the east, and while skies have been mostly cloudy, sunshine levels are on the up from midweek next week.

In its latest farming commentary, Met Éireann says farmers can expect limited drying and spraying opportunities until midweek, when a short-lived improvement in conditions is possible.
