East Cork Feels the Strain as Water Levels Drop

Uisce Éireann is calling on the public in East Cork to lend a hand in conserving water this summer, as high demand and falling water levels put pressure on supplies across the region.

Areas currently affected include Castlemartyr, Mogeely, Cloyne, Knockadoon, Ladysbridge, Garryvoe, and Shanagarry. In response, Uisce Éireann has stepped up monitoring, leak detection, and pipe repairs to help maintain supply — but is also asking households and businesses to do their bit.

“Reduced river and groundwater levels, combined with high demand, are impacting supplies,” said Niall O’Riordan, Cork Operations Manager. “We’re actively managing the network, but public support is vital. Even small daily changes can make a big difference.”

Everyday actions like taking shorter showers, using a basin for washing dishes, fixing leaking taps, and turning off the tap while brushing teeth can significantly cut down water use. To help households track their savings, Uisce Éireann offers an online Water Conservation Calculator at www.water.ie/calculator.

Rainfall varied sharply across the country last week.

Parts of Connacht and north Ulster were soaked, with up to 49mm falling — nearly three times the average.

Meanwhile, it was exceptionally dry in the south and east, where some stations recorded less than 2mm.
