Solar Power Takes Off at Shannon Airport

Shannon Airport’s solar PV farm took centre stage this week as Minister Seán Canney TD visited the airport for the first time in his role as Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rails and Ports.
The visit comes as part of ongoing engagement between the Department of Transport and The Shannon Airport Group, which is currently delivering a €30 million investment programme. A key feature of the programme is Ireland’s first solar PV farm on airport lands—marking a major step forward in the sector’s sustainability efforts.
Minister Canney was briefed by CEO Mary Considine and her team on the airport’s infrastructure upgrades, including the redevelopment of departure Gates 1–5, terminal improvements, and the construction of over 140,000 sq ft of new R&D space at Shannon Airport Business Park. Construction on two large-scale units totalling 100,000 sq ft is scheduled to begin later this year.

“Shannon Airport is a critical part of Ireland’s transport network,” said Minister Canney. “Its investment in connectivity and sustainability shows real leadership and ambition. Passenger numbers are up 7% this year—clear evidence of strong regional demand.”
CEO Mary Considine said Shannon’s solar PV project underscores the airport’s long-term commitment to climate targets. “Regional airports like Shannon play a key role in balanced national development. With 40% of the population in our catchment, our growth supports wider economic and environmental goals.”
The solar farm is expected to significantly reduce the airport’s carbon footprint and set a new benchmark for renewable energy integration in Irish aviation.
