Aer Lingus has announced a two-year partnership with Dr Norah Patten, the Mayo-born scientist and astronaut candidate preparing to become the first Irish person in space.

As she continues her intensive research and training in Canada and the United States, Aer Lingus will provide transatlantic travel support, flying Dr Patten between Ireland and North America—the centre of her mission preparation.

A qualified aeronautical engineer and long-time STEM advocate, Dr Patten is currently working with the International Institute for Astronautical Sciences (IIAS), conducting microgravity experiments, high-G flight training, and spacesuit testing at the National Research Council (NRC) in Canada. Her flight will mark a major milestone in Ireland’s scientific and space exploration history.

Speaking about the partnership, Dr Patten said: “My mission to become the first Irish person in space is a huge undertaking and I’m incredibly grateful for the support from Aer Lingus. This partnership will help ensure I can travel easily as I continue preparations for spaceflight, while also encouraging the next generation of explorers to dream big.”

Aer Lingus CEO Lynne Embleton said the airline is proud to support Dr Patten’s historic journey.

She added, “Connecting people and possibilities is at the heart of what we do. Norah’s journey is a remarkable example of what Irish ambition can achieve. She’s a true trailblazer and a powerful role model, particularly for young women in STEM.”

Dr Patten’s childhood dream of space began at just 11 years old, following a visit to NASA Glenn Research Center. Today, she’s poised to make that dream a reality—bringing Irish innovation to new heights.
