Uisce Éireann has completed urgent and technically demanding repair works on a key pipeline that supplies one-third of the Greater Dublin Area’s drinking water.

The pipeline, which runs between Ballymore Eustace Water Treatment Plant and the Saggart Reservoir, was shut down for a critical 28-hour window over the weekend to facilitate the repairs.

The water supply through the pipe was turned off on Friday night and the line fully drained to allow access. Specialist teams worked around the clock to repair five leaks and replace 35 metres of damaged pipe.

Crews were operating under a strict time limit, with the shutdown period capped at 28 hours to avoid a drop in treated water storage levels that could have caused significant supply disruptions across Dublin and surrounding counties.

The repairs were completed within the required timeframe and water is now flowing through the pipeline again. The network is currently refilling and gradually returning to normal capacity.

Declan Healy, Programme Manager at Uisce Éireann, thanked the public for their cooperation during the repair period. “We would like to thank everyone for coming together to conserve water. Your efforts have helped safeguard the water supply to yourselves and vulnerable users while supporting the crews working throughout the weekend to successfully deliver these essential works,” he said.

Healy also acknowledged the efforts of the repair crews and partners involved. “Through our extensive planning and your water conservation we were able to execute these works safely and effectively, ultimately securing the water supply to the Greater Dublin Area. We would like to thank the crews, team members, our contractor partners GMC Utilities Group and our partners in the Local Authorities for their hard work.”

Uisce Éireann is asking households and businesses in Dublin, Kildare and Wicklow to continue conserving water over the coming days as the system fully recharges.
