Stricken yacht rescued in Waterford swell

Helvick Head RNLI launched to the aid of two people on Saturday afternoon after their yacht encountered trouble in rough seas off Bunmahon, Co Waterford.
The lifeboat was requested by the Irish Coast Guard at 12.20pm following reports that the vessel was struggling to make progress in challenging onshore conditions. At the time, an easterly Force 4–5 wind was creating difficult seas close to the coastline.
Volunteer crew members Alan Kelly (helm), Joe Foley, Shane Walsh and Rian Kelly responded in the inshore lifeboat and quickly located the yacht near the shore. After assessing the situation, the decision was made to establish a tow and bring the vessel safely to Boatstrand Pier, where Bunmahon Coast Guard provided further assistance.

Liam Harty, Lifeboat Operations Manager at Helvick Head RNLI, praised both the sailors and the crew. “We would like to commend the sailors for wearing lifejackets and having access to phone communication for raising the alarm. This resulted in a good outcome today and we wish both of them well,” he said.
He added that the quick thinking of the yacht’s crew played a key role in the safe rescue. “The wind direction and sea state were challenging, so their decision to call for help and their use of lifejackets were major factors in the successful recovery.”
Mr Harty also urged the public to take safety precautions while on the water. “As the summer continues, we encourage all water users to wear a suitable lifejacket, carry a means of calling for help, and check the weather before setting out. Should you get into difficulty or see someone else in trouble, call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coast Guard.”
