Ground to soften as unsettled weather sets in

Low pressure is set to dominate for the week ahead, bringing a return to unsettled conditions. Rainfall will be above average in most areas, with temperatures back to seasonal norms at 13 to 15 degrees, according to Met Éireann.
Drying and spraying
Drying will be poor for the next seven days as showers and longer spells of rain move across the country. Blustery winds will add to the difficulties, leaving spraying opportunities very limited.
Grass and soil conditions
Most soils are currently dry and trafficable, particularly in the south and southeast, where soil moisture deficits of 50 to 60mm are already holding back grass growth. With the unsettled outlook, these deficits are expected to reduce. Farmers in the west, northwest, midlands and southwest can expect moderately and poorly drained soils to become saturated or waterlogged, with pressure likely to mount on ground conditions for grazing and harvesting.
Outlook
Sunshine amounts will be below average, reducing growth potential. With soils set to soften in many regions, livestock management and field operations will need close attention through the week.
