Met Éireann and the UK Met Office have issued a series of weather warnings as Storm Amy is forecast to bring severe conditions to Ireland on Friday, with the strongest winds expected along Atlantic coasts.

A Status Red marine warning has been issued from Loop Head to Rossan Point to Fair Head, where southwest to west winds may reach violent storm force 11 at times. The warning will be in effect from 2pm until 8pm on Friday.

On land, a Status Orange wind warning has been put in place for Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo. Forecasters say near gale to gale force and very gusty southwest to west winds are likely from 2pm until 10pm. Impacts could include fallen trees, damage to power lines with possible outages, wave overtopping along coasts and very difficult travelling conditions.

A nationwide Status Yellow wind warning will also apply, beginning at midday Friday and lasting until midnight. Strong to near gale force and gusty southwesterly winds could lead to debris being displaced, some fallen trees and hazardous travel. A Status Yellow rainfall warning has also been introduced for Galway and Kerry from 9am to 3pm.

In Northern Ireland, the UK Met Office has issued a Yellow wind warning for Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Tyrone and Derry. That warning will run from 2pm Friday until noon on Saturday, with potential disruption expected during Friday evening and overnight.

Stormy Amy, which will undergo rapid development tonight, will move quickly northeastward along Ireland’s west coast before tracking toward northwest Scotland. It will be a fast moving storm.

There will be gusts of 120 km/h or higher in the far northwest and north, 100–110 km/h in the west and southwest, 80–90 km/h elsewhere.

Saturday Warnings

Even though Storm Amy will have tracked north-eastward over Scotland, wind and rain warnings have been introduced for parts of Ireland on Saturday.

Counties Clare, Kerry, Galway, and Mayo are under a wind warning from midnight to noon on Saturday. Donegal, Leitrim, and Sligo face combined wind and rain warnings over the same period, while Dublin, Louth, and Wicklow are also under a wind alert from 6 a.m. to noon. Forecasters have warned of difficult travelling conditions, debris and loose objects being displaced, localised flooding, and the potential for some fallen trees.
