Met Éireann climate projection dataset wins national award

Met Éireann has been named Public Sector Organisation of the Year at the 2025 Irish Climate Change Leadership Awards (ICCLA), with its TRANSLATE climate projection dataset cited as a key driver of the win.
TRANSLATE is Ireland’s first standardised, high-resolution climate projection dataset. Developed in partnership with University of Galway’s ICHEC and University College Cork’s MaREI Centre, the dataset delivers detailed forecasts of future climate conditions across Ireland and is now central to national climate planning.
The dataset underpins major government strategies including the Climate Action Plan, the National Adaptation Framework, and the National Climate Change Risk Assessment. It has also shaped infrastructure policy: a study conducted with Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) using TRANSLATE data found that existing road drainage standards may not withstand future rainfall levels. The findings led to a national revision of infrastructure guidelines.

TRANSLATE is part of Met Éireann’s broader climate services expansion, outlined in its 2024–2034 Strategic Plan. The agency has established a Climate Services Division and launched the National Framework for Climate Services (NFCS), which was highlighted in the 2024 UN State of Climate Services report as a model for coordinated national delivery.
Met Éireann now provides climate data and guidance to sectors including water, energy, agriculture, heritage, and finance. Its services include flood forecasting, infrastructure vulnerability assessments, and high-impact weather warnings.
The ICCLA award was presented this week in Dublin.
