Peat to Power: Bord na Móna’s €1bn Wind Venture Gains Ground

Bord na Móna has reported an operating profit of €31.9 million for the financial year ending April 2025, its first full year as a fully renewable energy provider.
The company, now trading exclusively in clean energy, marked the year with significant progress across its infrastructure and environmental initiatives.
During the 2025 financial year, Bord na Móna delivered several major renewable energy projects including the Derrinlough Wind Farm, the Cloncreen Battery Energy Storage System and Timahoe North Solar Farm, developed in partnership with ESB. These developments added 260 megawatts of new generation capacity to the national grid. The company invested €111 million in renewable infrastructure over the year, with €95 million allocated to wholly owned projects and €16 million to joint ventures.
A key highlight was the advancement of its €1 billion joint venture with SSE Renewables, which aims to deliver up to 800 megawatts of new onshore wind capacity. Bord na Móna now operates a renewable energy portfolio of 1 gigawatt and is progressing a pipeline of 5 gigawatts across wind, solar, battery storage and offshore projects. Over the past five years, the company has invested more than €50 million in grid development to support this expansion.
Environmental restoration also featured prominently in FY25, with 2,778 hectares of former peatlands rehabilitated under the Peatlands Climate Action Scheme. These restored bogs are now contributing to carbon sequestration and the revival of natural habitats. Since the scheme began, Bord na Móna has rehabilitated 20,000 hectares in total.
The company’s financial performance enabled further investment in community and enterprise initiatives. €1.4 million was distributed through renewable energy community benefit funds, supporting education, local business and neighbour schemes. Scholarship programmes at Cloncreen and Oweninny wind farms supported 22 students, with €165,000 committed to STEM and sustainability studies.
Through its Accelerate Green programme, Bord na Móna has supported over 60 sustainability-focused companies and helped create more than 700 jobs since 2022. 35 businesses participated in the programme in 2025. The New Beginnings initiative, launched in 2023, has helped former peatland workers establish 20 new businesses, generating 35 jobs across the Midlands.
The company’s Sustainability Update reported a 38 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions year-on-year and a 9 percent increase in renewable energy generation compared to the previous year.
Chief Executive Tom Donnellan described FY25 as a landmark year for the company, noting the successful delivery of five major renewable projects and the continued growth of its clean energy portfolio. With planning secured for 300 megawatts of new onshore wind and 20 additional projects totalling 3 gigawatts expected to move through planning in the coming years, Donnellan said Bord na Móna remains focused on building the infrastructure and innovation needed to secure Ireland’s green energy future and meet climate targets for 2030.
