Heavy rain and gale warnings as second storm of season approaches

Met Éireann has not ruled out issuing upgraded weather warnings for Storm Bram, the second named storm of the season.

The forecaster has already issued a series of orange and yellow alerts ahead of the system, which is expected to bring very strong winds and heavy rain across Ireland on Tuesday.

An orange wind warning is in place for Cork, Kerry, Waterford and Wexford from 7am to 3pm. Gale force southerly winds will strike coastal areas, with risks including flooding in low-lying zones during high tide, wave overtopping, hazardous travel, displaced debris, disruption to outdoor events and possible power outages.

A second orange warning runs from 10am to 9pm for Cavan, Donegal, Monaghan, Clare, Limerick, Tipperary, Connacht, Longford, Offaly and Westmeath. Severe gusts are expected with similar impacts.

A yellow rain warning has been issued for Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford, Cork, Kerry, Tipperary and Waterford from 9pm Monday until 9am Tuesday. Heavy rain on saturated ground may lead to river flooding, surface water and difficult travel conditions.

A nationwide yellow wind warning is also in place from 6am to 9pm Tuesday. Southerly winds will reach gale force, with the strongest gusts later confined to western and northwestern counties.

In Northern Ireland, the UK Met Office has issued a yellow wind warning for Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Tyrone and Derry. Disruption is possible, particularly in western areas, between 9am and 9pm Tuesday.

Marine warnings

A red storm warning has been issued from Mizen Head to Slyne Head to Malin Head, where south to southwest winds will occasionally reach violent storm force 11 between 9am and 11.30pm Tuesday.

An orange storm warning is in place from Valentia to Erris Head to Malin Head from 10am Tuesday until midnight, with winds reaching storm force 10.

A yellow gale warning covers all Irish coasts and the Irish Sea from midnight Tuesday until midnight Wednesday. Southerly gales, later veering westerly, will reach gale force 8 or strong gale force 9, with storm force winds in some western and northwestern waters.
