Ireland experienced a notably wet and warm week, with rainfall totals well above average in all regions, according to the latest Met Éireann farming commentary.

Rainfall levels ranged from 115% to a remarkable 460% of normal. The west bore the brunt of the wet conditions, with 69.2mm recorded at Shannon Airport, Co. Clare – the highest in the country. In contrast, the driest location was Casement Aerodrome in Dublin, with 14.5mm logged.

Looking ahead, the unsettled weather pattern is set to persist. Rain and showers are forecast throughout the week, with most areas expected to receive above-average rainfall once again. Parts of the east and midlands could see up to three times the normal rainfall, while the northeast is likely to experience more typical levels for the time of year.

Temperatures over the past seven days were also well above seasonal norms. Mean air temperatures ranged from 16.5°C to 18.7°C – between 1.3°C and 3.2°C higher than average. The highest readings were again at Shannon Airport, while Cork Airport recorded the lowest.

Soil temperatures followed a similar trend, with readings between 17.2°C and 21.4°C, running 2 to 6 degrees above normal. While air temperatures are expected to ease slightly this week – returning to average or just 1 degree above – soil temperatures are forecast to remain significantly higher than usual. Daytime air temperatures will range from around 15°C in the west to 17°C in the southeast.
