Strong grass growth to slow as wetter weather approaches

Farmers across Ireland are seeing strong grass growth this week thanks to well above average soil temperatures.
Mean soil temperatures range between 16.8 and 20.2 degrees, according to the latest Met Éireann farming commentary. Air temperatures are expected to decrease slightly in the coming week but will remain around average for this time of year. Soil temperatures are forecast to stay above average, supporting continued growth.
Drying conditions have been generally good until Monday afternoon, with only occasional showers. However, wetter weather is expected from Tuesday onwards, which may limit further drying and increase soil moisture. Currently, all soils are dry and easily trafficked, with soil moisture deficits ranging from 17mm to 65mm. Soils in the east and south are the driest and show some restriction to growth, while soils in the west and southwest remain more favourable.
Opportunities for spraying this weekend will be limited, particularly in the west and north, where showers and longer spells of rain are forecast. Early mornings and late evenings are expected to provide the best windows for spraying.
From Tuesday, wetter and more unsettled conditions will reduce soil moisture deficits and bring soils in the west and southwest close to saturation.
