Autumn Outlook: Met Éireann updates Extended Range Forecast

Met Éireann has issued its extended long-range forecast for the coming month, signalling a continuation of unsettled weather across Ireland in early September.
During the first week of September, low pressure systems are expected to dominate, bringing wetter-than-average conditions, particularly across the southwest, west and northwest. Temperatures are forecast to remain near the seasonal average.
Confidence in the forecast decreases from the second week onward, but early indications suggest a brief period of higher pressure. Rainfall during this time may be below average, with temperatures close to or slightly above seasonal norms. Week three shows a similar pattern, with rainfall expected to be near average, possibly slightly below in western and northern counties, and temperatures remaining at or just above the usual September levels. By the fourth week, low pressure may return, increasing the likelihood of slightly above-average rainfall while temperatures hold near normal.
Looking further ahead, the seasonal outlook for September, October and November points to above-average temperatures overall, with mean temperatures forecast to be 0.5 to 1.0°C higher than average. Rainfall is expected to be variable, with the potential for both wetter and drier periods, though drier spells are more likely at times in October. Coastal sea surface temperatures are also expected to be above average, ranging 0.5 to 2.0°C higher than normal.
Met Éireann advises that while some weeks may bring drier or sunnier conditions, overall early autumn is likely to be warmer than usual, with occasional wet spells across the country.
