Government Mobilises Ahead of Storm Season

Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage James Browne TD has warned Ireland must be ready as the storm season begins.
Browne convened the National Emergency Co-ordination Group yesterday to review national preparedness and ensure all agencies are resourced to respond to severe weather.
The NECG brings together government departments, local authorities, the health services, An Garda Síochána, the Defence Forces, utility providers and transport operators. Browne said a coordinated, whole-of-Government approach is essential to protect communities and maintain essential services when storms hit.
Highlighting lessons from Storm Éowyn in January, Browne said a full review of the response has been submitted to the Government Task Force on Emergency Planning. He said the report will inform future responses and urged rapid implementation of its recommendations.

The Minister also welcomed the new Community Support Centre Guidance Document, which gives local authorities and voluntary groups clear structures for activating emergency support. Browne called on utility and communications providers to continue strengthening recovery systems to minimise disruption to communities.
Meanwhile, a series of weather warnings have been introduced ahead of the first named storm of the season. Storm Amy will impact Ireland on Friday.
