Gas Networks Ireland trials hydrogen-ready pipeline technology

hydrogen-1200x675 Gas Networks Ireland trials hydrogen-ready pipeline technology

Gas Networks Ireland is piloting a new advanced pipeline technology that could cut emissions, boost efficiency and prepare the national gas network for hydrogen.

The technology, a patented composite pipeline developed by international partner Purapipe International, will be tested under real-world conditions at Gas Networks Ireland’s Network Innovation Centre. Off-grid testing by service delivery partner Murphy International will evaluate safety, integrity and performance before any wider rollout.

The pilot aims to explore how the technology could reduce the carbon footprint of pipeline infrastructure and support Ireland’s transition to renewable gases, in line with government energy policy. Initial operational results are expected in late 2026.

Bobby Gleeson, Chief Operations Officer at Gas Networks Ireland, said the project demonstrates the company’s commitment to innovation and future-proofing the gas network. Jesper Steen, CEO of Purapipe International, said the collaboration highlights the potential of more efficient and environmentally friendly infrastructure.

The initiative is part of Gas Networks Ireland’s broader innovation programme, which includes biomethane connections and hydrogen blending trials, designed to maintain energy security while supporting a low-carbon future.
