OPW approves funding for Monkstown flood study

The Office of Public Works has approved additional funding for Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council in Dublin to carry out a flood study in the Monkstown area.
The council will receive €64,382 to map flood risk linked to the Sallynoggin and Stradbrook Streams. This follows €135,000 granted in 2020, bringing the total allocation to €199,382.
The funding comes under the Minor Flood Mitigation Works and Coastal Protection Scheme, introduced in 2009 to support local authorities in tackling localised flooding and coastal protection issues. Since its launch, seven applications from Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown have been supported.
The scheme provides up to 90 per cent of costs for projects valued at less than €750,000. Applications are assessed against economic, social and environmental criteria, including cost benefit. Local authorities must also ensure that works do not increase flood risk elsewhere.
The OPW said the commencement and progression of works rests with each local authority once funding is approved.
